It Is Not A Failure Until You Accept It

In the journey of life, we often encounter challenges, setbacks, and moments where things don’t go as planned. These moments can feel like failures, casting doubt on our abilities and aspirations. However, it’s essential to understand that failure is not a definitive endpoint but rather a stepping stone towards growth and success. The pivotal point lies in how we perceive and respond to these setbacks.

I would prefer to say that it didn’t go as planned than saying that I failed. The only time I would agree that I failed is when I didn’t give it a second try. It is really not a failure until you accept it. The man who built an electric bulb tried one hundred times, so tell me why you should give up at just the first trial? You can reject failure by doing most of these:

Change your mindset

Until you change your mindset from a state of stagnancy to a state of growth, you will keep accepting failure. Every setback carries within it valuable lessons waiting to be unearthed. When we refuse to accept failure as the end, we open ourselves up to a wealth of learning opportunities. Each experience, whether positive or negative, contributes to our personal and professional development. By embracing failure as a catalyst for growth, we transform setbacks into stepping stones towards success. Take every failure as an opportunity to restrategize your plan. If plan A didn’t work, create another plan A. There must be a reason for failing, find out why and correct your mistake.

When I was in medical school I had a friend who told me that he would rather fail than have a half knowledge. I didn’t quite understand him immediately until I gave it a thought. He said each time he fails a subject, he does not worry over it, rather he sees it as a chance to read the subject all over again and pay attention to areas that he overlooked. I think his understanding of failure was quite interesting to me.

Develop grit

Grit simply means the act of persevering. I studied in Russia and in the Russian language. I have always wanted to graduate with first class; the Russian language was a huge barrier. Imagine learning English for eighteen years of your life and then travelling to a faraway country to study in their language without prior knowledge. The beginning was so hard but I persevered. I knew what I wanted and there was no room to give up so, I found techniques to study better despite the language difficulties. I am grateful for the experience because it is part of who I am today. One thing struck me, a classmate of mine walked up to me and said, “The difference between you and me is that you have perseverance”. He also wanted to graduate with first class but he could not continue with that dream but believe me, he was an exceptional student.

So you could have intelligence and skills but it takes grit to actually get to the finish line. If you don’t want to be a mediocre person in what you do, then you need grit. It takes grit to reget failure and actually keep trying till you get what you want.

Acknowledge that you failed

Acknowledging that you failed means that you have accepted that it is part of your story but it will not remain that way. By accepting our setbacks, we free ourselves from the burden of regret and self-doubt, allowing us to focus on what lies ahead. Some persons see failure them not being good enough, hence no room for growth. You need to get out of that mindset. You can cry, take the blame, avoid work for one day, avoid your friends for one day, and mourn over the money and time lost but do not remain in that state. Accept that it has happened and re-strategise.

Embrace your journey

Ultimately, life is a journey filled with ups and downs, twists and turns. Embracing the mindset that failure is not final enables us to navigate this journey with courage and resilience. Every setback becomes a stepping stone, every challenge a chance to grow stronger, and every failure a lesson learned. By reframing our perception of failure, we empower ourselves to pursue our dreams with unwavering determination.

I have not heard a story of a successful man/woman who never failed. Often you would notice that they failed more than they succeeded? Did that failure stop them from forging ahead?

Even as I am writing this to you, I have failed countless times but that didn’t stop me from still trying to get to the finish line. If you are running a marathon race, the goal is to reach the finish line, even if you fall, stand and continue. The failures in your stories make them real. It only becomes a failure when you stop trying.
