We all want to get a scholarship but do we know what to do to get them? Scholarships are like gifts from above, a lot of students have passed through the university or secondary school through scholarships.

There are different kinds of scholarships; which are the fully funded scholarships, need-based scholarships, merit-based scholarships and the partially funded scholarships. If offered the fully funded scholarship, your tuition fees, accommodation and living costs will be covered. If offered the partially funded scholarship, just a part of your tuition fees will be covered. Merit based scholarships are for smart students, students who have very high grades and also involved in other activities in school. Need-based scholarships are for students who cannot afford to go to school without financial aids. You should to note that need-based and merit-based scholarships can fall under both fully funded or partially funded scholarships.
The journey to win a scholarship to further your academics into the undergraduate or postgraduate level starts from when you were still in school, either secondary school or university. To win a scholarship, you need to bear it in your heart that you really need a scholarship to further your next level in school. Bearing it in mind helps you to be alert about it. You don’t learn how to dance in old age, rather you start learning when you are still young. Here are the following things you need to do in order to win a scholarship:
Be an excellent student
Schools that offer scholarships to students always require a certain GPA in order to offer any student a scholarship. The higher your GPA, the higher your chances of winning any scholarship. Why still in school, you need to work hard. Be among the best ten students in class and never relent.

Always ask questions in class. The more you ask questions, the more the teachers notice you and the more they are likely to help you to succeed. Do your assignments on time and submit on time. If teachers can give very good remarks about you, the sky will be your limit in the scholarship world.
Involve in other activities
Being brilliant alone is not enough to win a scholarship, you need to be outstanding. Remember you are not the only brilliant student in the world. The question is, what makes you stand out? Why should the scholarship committee choose you over the other brilliant student? So as a secondary school student, you need to join clubs in school like the drama club, debate club, spelling bee club, sport club, news club and others. Joining any of these clubs in school will give you something to write about in your personal statement.

As an undergraduate or graduate students, you need to do researches, write publications, volunteer to organisations, do internships, work if you can and get experiences. Once you have done all these or any of these, you will have an upper hand in winning scholarships.
Write additional tests
Some schools require you to submit test scores like SAT or GRE/GMAT when applying for scholarships, while others don’t. I recommend you write any of these tests as this will give you more scholarship opportunities to apply to. For students who are seeking scholarships to do their undergraduate degree, you should write SAT and get a high score. For students who are seeking for scholarships for their master’s degree, you should write GMAT or GRE depending on the course you are applying for. It is not mandatory to write these tests and money for registrations to these tests can be a barrier to some students but write the test if you can.
Learn to write good essays
If you are not good in writing essays or letters, this is the time to prepare for it. Learn how to write good personal statements, statement of purpose, motivational letters, research proposals and others. The earlier you can put your thoughts in writing, the better. Apart from your school certificate and transcript, a good personal statement essay explains who you are and what you have done in a nutshell to the scholarship committee.
Research and apply early

Start making researches on schools that offer scholarships. Find out if they offer the course that you are seeking to apply for. Find out about their application window, send emails to them if you have any questions that you need them to answer. After gathering your documents, apply early. I always tell my followers, the earlier you apply for scholarships, the better for you. Avoid procrastination when it comes to scholarships.
